Risk Management

    Risk is the integral component of business activity. It may be identified as a probability of negative consequences resulting from events or actions. Risk may arise in operational (day-to-day) or strategic (focused on long-term plans) activity of a business entity. Sometimes risk may arise as a result of non-compliance with the respective legislative acts or commercial contracts. In some cases, the risk arises when not enough effort has been taken to conduct proper scrutiny of potential business partners. If the risk was not considered beforehand, the negative consequences for a company such as financial losses and legal liabilities may arise. Undue risk assessed at the stage of M&A deals can even threaten the existence of a company. Generally it is possible to overcome the financial loss sustained, but it would be less costly for a company to prevent it.

    Often an enterprise faces negative consequences due to lack of awareness of risks or the lack of skills to prevent or mitigate them. This can be compared to an iceberg, with only its small top visible, whilst its larger portion is hidden beneath the water. An example of this would be an acquisition of a participating interest (share) in a company with hidden debts, or a business entity registered in violation of the legislation of Ukraine. Therefore it is imperative to entrust work with respect to risk assessment and its management, to competent specialists.
